Whether you are looking for the bright lights of a city park or the sprawling hills of a university campus, Tolland County delivers. We are talking about long runs, steep drops, and plenty of space to open up the throttle. Here is where the locals go when the snow piles up.
120 South St, Vernon, CT 06066
This is the undisputed heavyweight champion of sledding in the area. The hill below the Fox Hill Memorial Tower is legendary for its steepness and length. Best of all, it is one of the few spots that features lighting for evening runs, making it a 2026 favorite for after work adrenaline.
Horsebarn Hill Rd, Storrs, CT 06269
If you want scale, this is the place. Horsebarn Hill offers massive, sweeping slopes with a view of the university’s agricultural fields. It is a wide open area that lets you pick your own line, but be prepared for a serious hike back up to the top.
300 Valley Falls Rd, Vernon, CT 06066
For a more scenic experience, Valley Falls offers beautiful terrain inside a 196 acre nature preserve. While it is popular for winter hiking, the open areas near the pavilion provide great natural slopes. It is a bit more of a "rugged" feel compared to the manicured golf courses.
466 Main St, Ellington, CT 06029
The hill behind the middle school is a classic community hub. It is the perfect medium grade hill where it is steep enough for the big kids but safe enough for the younger ones. On a snow day, you will find half the town here with their plastic sleds and tubes.
1 Falcon Way, Tolland, CT 06084
Similar to Ellington, the slopes at Tolland Middle School are a reliable local go to. The terrain is consistent and easy to access from the parking lots. It is a great spot if you want a fun, social atmosphere with other families from the neighborhood.
We want everyone to get out and enjoy these hills, but please keep in mind that sledding is an "at your own risk" activity. We are not responsible for any wipeouts, cold toes, or runaway tubes. Always check the Vernon or Tolland town websites for the latest on park hours and safety rules. Watch out for the occasional fence or tree, stay off the actual athletic fields if they are roped off, and never sled into the parking lot. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.
