Good morning, Tolland County Swarm! Today is Tuesday 6/17, and that means it’s National Root Beer Day! I know there’s some of you out there that don’t like root beer (and I’m sorry to tell you, that you’re wrong), but for those of us that do enjoy the spicey beverage, it’s the perfect day to get yourself a float. You deserve it!

EMAIL BROUGHT TO YOU BY
ASHFORD AREA ARTS COUNCIL

🎨 Ready to trade your screen glare for garden flair? Swing by Summer’s Palette at Westford Hill Distillers and wander a hillside dotted with blooms, art tents, and that unmistakable “is that lilac or gin?” breeze.
Stroll the grounds, chat up 30+ local artists, and—if inspiration hits—dab a little paint on your own canvas en plein air. Green thumbs will be swapping pollinator tips, and there’s a kid’s table so the little ones can go full finger-paint mode while you marvel. (Fido sits this one out, sorry.)
Fuel the adventure with a craft cocktail straight from the distillery, then chase it with something tasty from the food-truck lineup—snack, lunch, whatever feeds the vibe.
It’s free to enter; if you feel the artsy love, toss a donation to the Ashford Area Arts Council on your way out. See you among the petals and paint splatters!

BRIEF BITES
☕️ Vernon’s eco-chic Radial Coffee Co. is brewing up location #3 - opening next month at 12 Goose Lane in Tolland with zero-emission roasts, a wraparound porch, and zero drive-thru vibes.
🎬 Mansfield Drive-In at 228 Stafford Rd will flick on its giant screens every single night this summer, serving up classic car-side popcorn and double features under the stars.

HIVE PICK

As the child of two music teacher parents, I’m going to promote the arts as much as I can. That’s why this week’s Hive Pick is Make Music Day in Hebron on Saturday 6/21 starting at 10am and ending at 8:30pm, thrown by The Town Center Project.
From solo acoustic acts, to full bands, all along Main St is going to be filled with musical goodness. There are ten different venues where people will be performing throughout the day (you can find the schedule here).
If you want to get in on some action, they’re holding an “air band” competition and an Impersonation Parade (dress as your favorite music artist). If you love live music, this is an event you don’t want to miss!

TO CO TRIVIA🤔
Which bubbly-voiced songbird with a tuxedo-black bib are the grasslands at Vernon’s Belding Wildlife Management Area managed to protect?

Bolton Notch:
Where Fault Lines, Footpaths, and Railroads Collide
Bolton Notch is where Connecticut geology goes full rockstar. Formed over 300 million years ago by shifting tectonic plates and later sculpted by glaciers, this dramatic pass cuts through the eastern highlands like nature’s version of a shortcut. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples used it as a key footpath connecting the Connecticut River Valley with the Thames River basin - basically, Connecticut’s original highway system.
By the 1800s, the notch was booming with wheels, rails, and tolls. The Hartford and Providence Turnpike passed right through, offering a smoother (and tollable) route between major towns. Then, in the 1870s, the New York & New England Railroad blasted a 535-foot tunnel through the rock. That tunnel’s still there, abandoned but totally walkable, and it’s one of the coolest historic remnants you’ll find in the woods.
Today, Bolton Notch State Park spans 95 rugged acres and connects directly to the Hop River State Park Trail and the East Coast Greenway.
