Good morning, Tolland County Swarm! Today is Tuesday 8/12, and that means it’s National Middle Child Day! Now, some of you might say, “Who?”, and that’s exactly the point. It’s the perfect day to make sure that middle child in your life knows that they aren’t the ‘forgotten' one. So, shoutout to my older brother Kiel!

Also, I have to give a birthday shoutout to my oldest son this week!

BRIEF BITES

🏠 One of Mansfield’s most unique homes, personally built in 1941 by Edwin O. Smith, namesake of the local high school, is now for sale at 674 Middle Turnpike.

LOCAL BITES: LAST CALL OF SUMMER

As summer hits the homestretch, I ran the backroads of Tolland County and pulled a dialed-in list of local producers - fresh fruit and veg, pasture-raised meats, raw milk, the good stuff. These are the spots locals actually hit (and yes, I checked they’re open), not just pretty pins on Google. If I missed your favorite, holler, I’ll spin up a bigger, always-updated blog page.

Johnny Appleseed’s Farm | 185 West Rd, Ellington, CT 06029 | Pick-your-own peaches and apples with a classic corn maze and pumpkin patch in season.

BUZZ BULLETIN

Got news, a gig, or a gem to shout from the rooftops?
Whether it’s a grand opening, killer event, hiring help, or just a cool thing your neighbors should see - The Buzz Bulletin is your megaphone!

Windham Preservation Inc: Big story, big stakes: Sinjar: 14 Days That Saved the Yazidis—a free book talk with author Susan Shand. Be there Aug 16 at 1pm at St. Paul’s Church, 27 Plains Rd, Windham Center (yes, light refreshments will be served). Hear how 50,000 Yazidis trapped on Mount Sinjar in 2014 sparked U.S. airdrops and action. It’s raw, real, and about confronting the first genocide of the 21st century—and the 14 days that changed the ending. Learn more.

Stafford Springs: If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m a huge proponent of live music, and Stafford is going all out with their celebration of International Play Music on the Porch Day AKA Porchfest on August 16th. You’ll find performances happening throughout the day on Main St from 11am to 11pm, residential addresses, and the library. This is the perfect excuse to visit Stafford Springs (it’ll have you wondering why you didn’t visit sooner) and rock out to all types of music. You can see who’s playing where here.

CRYSTAL LAKE: SUMMER’S SHINIEST 183 ACRES

This was from last week’s word scramble: Crystal Lake is Ellington/Stafford’s summer jewel - about 183 acres and ~50 feet at its deepest, fed by Aborn Brook with a dam at the north end. It wasn’t always “Crystal”: locals called it Square Pond and Ruby Lake until 1889; long before that, the Nipmuc knew the place as Wabbaquasset (“where cattails grow”).

Access is easy: the lone public swim spot is Sandy Beach on Route 140, and boaters have a state launch at 100 West Shore Rd. On the water, it’s 6 mph from sunset–9 a.m. (and Sundays noon–3 p.m.) and 45 mph the rest of the time; anglers get Trout Management Lake rules with occasional Atlantic salmon stocking - translation: legit multi-season fishing.
