Good morning, Tolland County Swarm! Today is Tuesday 9/9, and that means it’s National Teddy Bear Day! Did you know the most expensive teddy bear ever sold was encrusted with sapphires, diamonds, and gold and sold for a paltry $2 million. If you happen to know anyone with money to burn like that, feel free to send them my way!
Really quickly, I just want to say thank you to anyone who attends any of the events we post on here, and let the hosts know they heard about it on here. It doesn’t take much effort on your part, and it really helps us out!

Thanks to the local artists who replied last week, the talent is legit. Painters, printmakers, designers…
Would you be interested in a limited print CT Buzz collab with a local artist to support us?
P.S. You guys showed up big time - thank you for the grant tips and intros. Every lead helps us keep the Buzz buzzing for our towns.

DRINK
Here’s a cozy Cape tip for the week: fall’s creeping in, and I just got back from Cape Cod, so the cranberries were calling. Meet the Cranberry Bog Hot Toddy, two ways: classic and zero-proof. Simple, warm, and very New England.
Alcoholic
Heat 4 oz cranberry-apple juice until steaming (don’t boil).
In a mug, add 1½ oz aged rum + ½ oz honey.
Pour in the hot juice and stir until the honey dissolves.
Add a pinch of allspice, garnish with a lemon wheel (squeeze, then drop), sip.
Non-Alcoholic
Heat 4 oz cranberry-apple juice until steaming.
In a mug, add ½ oz spiced simple syrup (allspice/clove) + ½ oz honey.
Top with the hot juice and stir to dissolve.
Pinch of allspice, lemon wheel garnish, done.
Quick spiced syrup (if you need it): simmer equal parts sugar + water with a few whole cloves and a pinch of ground allspice for 2 minutes; cool and strain.

BRIEF BITES
🎉 Downtown Storrs is buzzing, three new openings on deck. Cut to the Chase just snipped the ribbon on a fresh space (they’ve been a downtown staple since 2010), and next up we’re celebrating Nikki’s Dog House (new spot, sister to the Putnam original) and Ledgebrook Massage Center, moving in from Mansfield to the heart of it all. Local glow-up, incoming.

TO CO TRIVIA🤔
Before its incorporation in 1727, what name did the 1720 group of eight English settlers give the area now known as Willington?

ROCKVILLE CROWNED
Building off of last week’s Brief Bites, Rockville was crowned a Connecticut State Cultural District (the first in Tolland County) and it fits like a glove. The Rockville Historic District is already National Register-listed, stretching over ~550 acres with 842 contributing buildings, a dense walk of mill-era brick, Victorian porches, and civic showpieces. You’ll spot styles from Greek Revival to Late Victorian and Classical Revival, all tied to the boom that spun along the Hockanum River.
Highlights? Start at the Memorial Building/Town Hall (1890) - home to the New England Civil War Museum and the state’s oldest, continuously used GAR Hall, recognized for its intact veterans’ space and civic symbolism. Then trace the river to the big mill complexes: Amerbelle (with Belding Brothers, Fitch Mill, and the Stone Mill) dominating the skyline; the thundering falls by the Hockanum Mill site; and the ongoing preservation push at Daniel’s Mill. These are all celebrated as industrial heavyweights that shaped Rockville’s economy and architecture. Cap it with the Rockville Public Library (founded on an 1893 bequest) anchoring downtown culture. That mix, civic landmarks + mill heritage + intact streetscapes, is exactly why the district gets recognition and why the new Cultural District badge should bring even more eyes (and foot traffic) to Main Street.
