NUTMEG STATE POT PIE WITH CHEDDAR BISCUIT TOP
Ingredients (serves 4–6)
3 cups shredded rotisserie chicken (or turkey)
2 Tbsp butter + 1 Tbsp olive oil
1 medium onion, 2 carrots, 2 celery stalks—diced
8 oz mushrooms, sliced (optional but great)
1 tsp chopped fresh sage, ½ tsp dried thyme
¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg (go light—just a hint)
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 cup apple cider (not vinegar)
1½ cups low-sodium chicken broth
½ cup heavy cream (or whole milk)
1 cup frozen peas, salt & pepper
Cheddar–Chive Biscuit Top
1¼ cups flour, 2 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp salt
4 Tbsp cold butter, cubed
½ cup shredded sharp white cheddar
2 Tbsp chopped chives
¾ cup buttermilk (or milk + squeeze of lemon)
Optional brush: 1 Tbsp melted butter + 1 tsp maple syrup
Directions
Heat oven to 425°F. In a large ovenproof skillet, sauté onion, carrots, celery in butter/oil 6–8 min; add mushrooms 3 min. Stir in sage, thyme, nutmeg, salt/pepper.
Sprinkle in ¼ cup flour; cook 1 min. Whisk in cider, then broth; simmer 3–4 min till slightly thick. Stir in cream, chicken, peas. Taste and adjust.
Biscuits: Mix dry ingredients, cut in butter to pebble-size, fold in cheddar/chives, then buttermilk. Drop 8–10 mounds over filling.
Bake 18–22 min until biscuits are golden and filling bubbles. Brush tops with maple butter if using. Rest 10 min.
CT twists: add sweet corn in summer, swap turkey after Thanksgiving, or a splash more cider for extra orchard vibes.

DANIEL BENTON HOMESTEAD:
TOLLAND’S OLDEST HOUSE WITH REVOLUTIONARY ROOTS
If you spotted “Daniel Benton Homestead” in last week’s word scramble, here’s the backstory: this sturdy 1720 house in Tolland is the oldest in town, built when Connecticut was still very much frontier country. Benton wasn’t a big general or politician, he was a farmer and patriot whose family lived here for six generations. The homestead itself has Revolutionary War cred: it sheltered French soldiers during Rochambeau’s march and later became a gathering place for veterans.
Daniel Benton (1707–1781) lived through the Colony-to-Revolution transition, and his name stuck to the property because of his role in town life and family roots. The homestead isn’t just a relic, it’s a slice of early New England domestic history, with original beams, wide-plank floors, and the kind of fireplaces that remind you how people actually survived those winters. Today, the Tolland Historical Society keeps the place alive, so when you walk through, you’re stepping right into the 18th century.
