It started Feb 6, 1978, snowed for roughly 30 hours, and dumped over two feet in places, including UConn’s Storrs campus, turning Mansfield and the surrounding towns into a white, wind-whipped maze.

At UConn, the roads got shut down under Gov. Ella Grasso’s emergency order, classes were canceled, and campus life flipped into survival mode fast, with students essentially stuck in place while towns around them went quiet except for plows, snowmobiles, and the sound of everyone realizing they were not, in fact, built for this.
