Good morning Tolland County!

Today is Monday, March 3rd, and it’s National Anthem Day, which feels like a nice little reset button. No politics, no noise, just a quick reminder that we’re all on the same team here, trying our best, loving our people, and keeping the lights on through whatever this year decides to throw at us.

In Today’s Tolland County Buzz:

  • Mutt Madness

  • Buzz & Tell

  • Blizzard of ‘78

  • Bolton Race

  • 30+ Events

Let’s dive in!

-Tyler DiGiovanni

It’s the inaugural Mutt Madness and we’re building the bracket right now. We’ve got 8 spots open, and if we get a bunch more entries, we’ll expand the tournament size.

How it works:

  • 8 spots open (first come, first entered)

  • If entries keep coming, we’ll grow the bracket (16, 32, etc.)

  • We drop matchups in the newsletter and readers vote

  • Voting starts next Tuesday’s newsletter with a link to cast your vote

  • Winners advance each round until we crown the champ and feature your pup

To enter: click the button below and fill out the simple form with your name, email, your dog’s name, and the best photo you can find.

BUZZ & TELL

🐱Adopt-a-pal: Meet Shazam!, a friendly, high-energy boy who just needs space, playtime, and enrichment to thrive.

🏡House of the week: Private wooded retreat vibes on nearly 3 acres, with a wide-open layout built for hosting and a legit chef’s kitchen setup. The cozy flex is a high-efficiency wood stove insert, plus a primary suite with dual walk-in closets. Check it out!

🔭Sky report: The Blood Moon just happened early this morning, so if you were up before sunrise, congrats on earning your astronomy badge. From tonight (3/3) through 3/9, your main draw is Jupiter blazing bright in the evening sky, easy to spot after sunset without any special equipment. Orion is still hanging around in the early evenings, and Leo is rising higher as we inch toward spring.

Dinner Club is back in West Hartford on March 19th at 6:30 pm, and it’s the easiest way to meet new people without doing the awkward “so… what do you do?” thing in a loud bar. Take a quick personality quiz, get matched with 5 others, then show up to a surprise restaurant and get the after-hours location texted out later. You cover your tab, and it’s $16 to lock your seat. Come hungry, leave with new neighbors.

Looks like we didn’t quite hit the numbers for a Mansfield/Windham Dinner Club this round, so we’re pressing pause for now.

Love local history?

The Gurleyville Grist Mill is looking for volunteer guides to give Sunday tours (1–5 pm) from mid-May through mid-October and help bring 19th-century milling tech to life. Training’s provided, the setting along the Fenton River is unbeatable, and you’ll get to share one of the Quiet Corner’s coolest preserved historic sites.

Support Connecticut Buzz and have an absurdly fun snow-day showdown with CONN-OPOLY, our CT-themed board game where you buy, trade, and build across real Nutmeg towns, landmarks, and industries like you’re time-traveling with dice. Every box also comes with a free digital Field Guide that turns each space into a bite-size CT history lesson, so you can learn something while you crush your family.

Conn-opoly is available wholesale too, making it a no-brainer for shop owners looking for a local bestseller or anyone running a fundraiser that actually gets people excited to open their wallets. Reach out!

BLIZZARD OF ‘78

Last week’s trivia had 63.4% of you nailing it, and honestly, you earned a victory lap because Blizzard of ’78 is the gold standard of Connecticut snow stories. It started Feb 6, 1978, snowed for roughly 30 hours, and dumped over two feet in places, including UConn’s Storrs campus, turning Mansfield and the surrounding towns into a white, wind-whipped maze.

At UConn, the roads got shut down under Gov. Ella Grasso’s emergency order, classes were canceled, and campus life flipped into survival mode fast, with students essentially stuck in place while towns around them went quiet except for plows, snowmobiles, and the sound of everyone realizing they were not, in fact, built for this.

Check out a documentary about the blizzard our reader Max. L. shared with us.
